They're a problem! Not just here in the park, but globally. Eggs make up roughly 40% percent of the waste from public spaces. In František Suchý Park it could be even more. Just look around. And yet the filters of smoked cigarettes contain hydrogen cyanide, ammonia or phenol, which are toxic to nature.
Most cigarette butts are not made of cotton wool or paper, they are actually plastic. We were surprised at how damaging they are to nature, how much water they can pollute. If you just dump them, they decompose there for 15 years!
Some types of cigarette filters contain various plastic fibres that do not break down at all. They break down into small pieces, microscopic plastic particles, and these get into the water. One cigarette butt leached into a litre of water kills fish. Each cigarette butt can pollute up to 500 litres. Hazardous substances released from them have been found in the bodies of 70% percent of seabirds and 30% percent of sea turtles. Not only that, a badly extinguished cigarette butt can cause fires and sometimes even disaster.
One in five smokers in the Czech Republic throw their cigarette butts on the ground!
And everyone should know that it doesn't belong on the ground, in the sewer, in the grass, or in the compost!
When you enjoy your cigarette, put out the butt, ideally not on the edge of the bench you are sitting on. Try right against a basket or the pavement.
Dispose of it in the mixed waste bin. There are a total of 5 bins in the park and it only takes a few steps to get to them.
