Visual restoration of the park

25 August 2020
12-16 h
František Suchý Park
Nad Olšinami 282/31Prague 10 - Strašnice

The first park restoration took place on 18 and 19 June 2019, before our first festival Anniversary of the birth of František Suchý June 21, 2019. In just one year, there has been a complete devastation of our visual reminder of the heroes of the Resistance, so this year, and again, we want to restore everything. We don't want to fight the vandals and make the park a guarded and sanitized space, but we will be persistent in our efforts and hopefully in time we will be able to populate the park enough that it will no longer be a place to anonymously vandalize public space and property.

The first impulse for the restoration was the vandalised state of the benches in the otherwise beautiful and cosy park, but also the vague awareness of the locals as to whom the park is actually dedicated.

The Nameless Park, although according to witnesses, after the war and until the 1980s it was called the Partisans' Park, Prague 10 City Hall, in cooperation with the Memory of the Nation, named in 2015 after František Suchý. Also present at the ceremony was the then 88-year-old František Suchý, a participant in the resistance for which he served 12 years in a communist prison. Mikuláš Kroupa originally proposed naming the park after him, but since it is not customary to name parks after still living personalities, it was named after his father, also František Suchý, the pre-war director of the Strašnický Crematorium. His father František and his son hid the ashes of those executed by the Nazis during the war and after the war he was also arrested by the communists, together with his wife Olga.

The visual restoration of the memorial to the father and son was designed by Michal Pěchouček, a local artist, with minimal intervention in the architecture of the park and the existing furnishings.

Park modifications:

Benches: Repainting of spray-painted and stained benches with a simple title FRANTIŠEK SUCHÉHO PARK.

Thematic corners: Two separate plazas with benches, one dedicated to the victims of Nazism (F. Suchý the Elder) and the other to Communism (Fr. Suchý the Younger). One bench in a circle with a large plaque for basic info about the respective resistance. The medallions were created in cooperation with Mikuláš Kroupoz from the Memory of the Nation, which is behind the inspiration to name the park after František Suchý.

Asphalt road: Simple, white inscription with information František Suchy, father and son. Two entrances to the park - two human destinies.

With the support of Prague 10 a Prague City Hall.
