We meet once every two months. At each meeting we read one particular book and then talk about it, analyze it, share our impressions. The club is open to anyone who wants to discover the depth of stories, reflect on what literature brings out in us - and get to know their neighbourhood in a stimulating and friendly atmosphere.
The next meeting will be held on Monday 1 December at 6pm. We will be discussing the book "The Only Child" by Guadalupe Nettel. The novel has been translated into English by Martina Kutková.
The capacity of the space is limited, so please make a reservation by e-mail knihovna@bubahof.com.
Mexican writer Guadalupe Nettel's fourth novel, "The Only Child", brings to the fore the theme of motherhood and the function of the family in the contemporary world. Rather than the exclusionary question of whether or not to have children, however, the author explores the concept of care, including whether as biological parents we are predisposed to care and whether we even have the capacity to care for ourselves.
The story of the novel unfolds from an ancient agreement between the narrator Laura and her long-time friend Alina, who have vowed to resist social pressure and voluntarily give up the role of mother. Later, while Laura has her fallopian tubes tied, Alina and her partner decide to undergo artificial insemination after having trouble conceiving. Against the backdrop of the characters' subsequent life choices and unexpected twists, the importance of community, friendship and love, which "comes in the most unexpected forms", emerges.
